Amendments to GA constitution

Posted: November 2, 2010 in Politics

Observations on one of the 5 proposed constitutional ammendments today.

As provided to the voters to say YES or NO: 1.  “Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to make Georgia more economically competitive by authorizing legislation to uphold reasonable competitive agreements?”

Wait a minute, This introduction sounds a bit biased to me. It assumes that the measure is beneficial as it  states that it makes Georgia more “economically competitive”.

However, it is my personal observation based on my personal experience as an employee, that the non-competes limit the employees ability to find a new job in the same market they’ve been working on. Some say that by voting YES to this ammendment, we would be allowing the law to “restrain trade”.

Furthermore, “The research on the topic from institutions such as Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government conclude that such contracts limit employee movement, stifle innovation, and result in less new company formation. The bottom line is that it will make it harder for you to get a new job.”
